Getting Started with Simple Fixed Assets

Why You Need a Proper Register

If you've been tracking fixed assets in a spreadsheet, you already know the pain: broken formulas, missing rows, and year-end panic. Simple Fixed Assets replaces all of that with a structured register that calculates depreciation automatically and keeps your numbers right.

Step 1: Create Your Register

After signing up, head to the Tools page and click Create New Register. Give it a name — something like "FY2025 Fixed Assets" — and set your financial year start date.

Step 2: Configure Depreciation Rates

Each asset category (Buildings, Machinery, Computer Equipment, etc.) has its own depreciation rate and method. You can set these during the setup wizard or adjust them later in the register settings.

Supported Methods

  • Straight-line — equal depreciation each year
  • Reducing balance — depreciation based on the remaining book value

Step 3: Import or Enter Assets

You have two options:

  1. CSV Import — upload your existing spreadsheet and map your columns to ours
  2. Smart Entry — answer a few simple questions and we'll create the asset for you

Step 4: Review and Roll Forward

Once your assets are in, review the calculated depreciation and book values. When year-end arrives, click Roll Forward to carry everything into the next period.

That's it. No barcode scanners. No GPS tracking. Just the numbers, done right.
